An Interview with a Vegan Weight Lifter

I’ve been curious about going vegan because I am a huge animal lover. A’s friend Nick made the switch to being a vegan awhile back and I asked A to reach out to him so I could ask him some questions. If you’d like to know more about Nick and follow his fitness journey you can follow him on Instagram: @nick.c93

How long have you been vegan?

I’ve been vegan for about a year and a half.

Why did you decide to become vegan?

My family has been vegetarian for years, my sister challenged me to try veganism for a month (bet you can’t do it). So I went cold turkey and just went for it. I work out regularly and felt a noticeable difference after that month, so I just stuck with it.

How much do you spend on groceries per month?

I spend about $400-$500 a month on groceries. My sister and I live together so that feeds two. I pack my meals or cook at home 90% of the time.

Do you find yourself spending more or less money monthly on food since making the change to vegan?

Definitely less, when I ate meat I ate in every day, every meal.

That was way more expensive keeping that supply. I also don’t snack on all of the processed foods and stuff I used to so I save there.

How often do you visit the grocery store?

Twice a month.

How in the world do you only go to the grocery store twice a month? I’m jealous!

Hahaha we usually eat everything we have before we go grocery shopping, then just load up. It helps not waste the food we have and we usually make the most creative meals when we have to use whatever we have left.

Do you typically buy the same things or try to mix it up?

I mix it up. I just google vegan recipes for whatever non vegan meal I’m wanting then shop accordingly. I do have a vegan cookbook also. There are some go to meals but I try to make something new as often as I can.

Do you have a favorite vegan recipe you could share?

Cinnamon Banana Blueberry Muffins are pretty awesome.

– 3 very ripe bananas

-1/4 cup oil (I use coconut) or vegan margarine

-1 cup sugar (I use coconut)

-2 cup flour

-1 teaspoon salt

-1 teaspoon soda

-whole lotta cinnamon

-add bluberries after you mix all of this together

*Mix and mash, add blubes, oven at 360 F for 25 min in muffin tin. Try not to eat all in one sitting.

That sounds good!

Do you use supplements to make sure you get your necessary vitamins?

I take Steel Supplements Veg Pro Protein, 2 shakes a day. I make a smoothie almost every morning that has Hawaiian Spiralina, and I drink colloidal silver regularly. Other than that I go for foods with the nutrients I’m looking for. (juicing)

How much are the supplements?

Steel Supplements Veg Pro $34.99 (last almost a month)

Hawaiiain Spiralina $32.21 (last 2 months)

Has your diet affected your gainz? (Do you feel like you are more tired, have to work out longer, aren’t getting as big)

I definitely don’t feel tired, there’s more energy if anything. I did at first lose 16 pounds, I blame that on just lack on knowledge on what to eat. I’m now the same weight I was when I started all of this. I have lost some strength, but I lost almost all body fat. I’ve never been this lean.

Do you use any gym related supplements, pre work out, etc?

Not regularly. If I’m having a slugglish day I’ll grab a Bang Energy drink but otherwise I just eat before.

How much do they cost per month?

Maybe $10-$15 a month on them
