Last week A and I hiked Poo Poo Point in Washington. I thought it was going to be a quick hike, like 20 minutes-ish one way, 40 minutes round trip. It ended up taking an hour and half to make it to the top with several generous breaks. I wanted to give up so many times but A kept me going. At one point, it was going to take us as long to get to the bottom as it was to make it to the top. He reminded me that I would probably regret not making it to the top. He was right. The scenery was beautiful and totally worth it.
There’s a song by Miley Cyrus I secretly really enjoy called “The Climb”. In the lyrics she says, “There’s always gonna be another mountain, I’m always gonna wanna make it move, Always gonna be an uphill battle, Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose, Ain’t about how fast I get there, Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side, it’s the climb”. And that’s how I’ve felt the past week.
On Wednesday last week we received a call from A’s work that the restaurant he’s been working at closed down. This was very unexpected and definitely put a damper on our vacation. A didn’t love this job, but it was a job nonetheless and it helped pay the bills. Now suddenly he wouldn’t have a job to come back to. We are very fortunate for two reasons. The first one is that we paid off a high payment debt last month. I’m not sure what we would’ve done if that wasn’t the case. The second reason is that I have been very fortunate to have a job that pays all of our bills. I’m glad that we started this debt free journey so we are able to live off one income and be fine. However, it is an uphill battle. One day A and I will both have jobs that we enjoy but until then, as Miley says, it’s all about the climb.
